Created to Work With God (in Honour & Glory.)
That prayer was often offered by Thomas Alvan Edison.
And indeed, Edison didn’t live in vain; because he became a notable inventor. He pioneered the distribution of electric power for use in the homes and industries, among his other inventions.
Obviously, that single invention is enjoyed today, beyond his own generation, as a blessing to mankind!
Originally, God made man to fellowship with Him, even in his (man’s) work! With man, work is meant as a blessing and not a punishment nor gruesome. We ought to enjoy our work, in and outside the home.
To work with God is to do the work of God.
Doing the Work of God
To do the work of God is to partner with God (Genesis 2:19-20) in His earthly business of:
• creating
• sustaining
• redeeming
• consummating
Obviously, work is the basic activity God gives us (Genesis 2:15).
Without doubt, it’s work that:
- takes the Gospel to the world;
- places food on the family table;
- to bring up Godly children; and…
- to build a happy nation.
Certainly, God blesses work as a seed.
Likewise, He intends that man enjoys his work, and be happy at it. Similarly, in the creation story, we see the Creator God who delighted in His own work, having created a world with such colourful and amazing varieties!
However, when a person takes on a job or career out of love of money (or ego, jealousy…) rather than with inner interest or love, he surely shall not enjoy his work nor take delight in it no matter the pay.
What Makes Our Work God’s Work?
We all have a specific work on earth to do and have joy in it. To be sure you’re doing God’s work, these three indicators must be seen by you:
• You must be sent into it. You will have passion for the work; be joyful at it, even within difficulties or hardship.
• The work is carried out in God’s way. You follow Biblical principles and ethics.
• The work glorifies God. God is praised through the work because it’s graceful and beneficial to other(s).
Concluding, the ultimate goal of the universe is to show the glory of God. Therefore, our work must align with that expression of God’s goodness and all other eternal qualities on earth.
What Do You Think?
1. Are you happy with your work (or studies as a student)? And why?
2. Do you see yourself, outside the church or fellowship, doing the work of God (through your vocation?) How or why?
Love it!
